Bulgaria Long ago, Bulgaria was the most powerful country in Europe, that is a title it no longer has, but it can still lay claim to being one of the most fascinating. A place where east meets west. Since Bulgaria peacefully waved goodbye to Communism in 1990, tourist facilities have become even better, from the beach resorts and fishing villages of he Black Sea to the new ski centre of Bansko, Bulgaria still offers tremendous value for money, while preserving its uniqueness. THE BLACK SEA Of all Bulgaria's changes as a tourist destination, it it the Black Sea that has been drawing visitors longer than any others, with sensational beaches, bags of history and value for money.
SOZOPOL Approximately 21 miles south of Bourgas, Sozopol is just about the last town on the coast, and could well be the best, an ancient fishing village on a peninsula much like Nessebur, making it a far better place to wander around. Its divided into old and new parts, and the old part is a warren of narrow cobbled streets, wooden houses, churches, cafe's restaurants and shops. Every September Sozopol hosts the Apollonia Arts Festival with opera, classical music and theatre.
